Earthy and roasty with a smooth creamy finish, our Sumatra Mandheling is a hearty dark roast from an island in Indonesia. This coffee has varietals of Bourbon, Catimor, and Typica and is naturally processed.

This coffee is also at the core of Ruth Hunt’s chocolate covered coffee beans.

Sumatra Bener Meriah Mandheling Grade 1 coffee is sourced from fifteen hundred family-owned farms organized around an export company called PT Mandheling Gayo International (MANDAGO), located in Bener Meriah Regency, Aceh District, on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia.  MANDAGO is a family-owned export company that operates its own mill and collaborates with farmers to access the international coffee markets.

This region of Indonesia is referred to as the Gayo land because the coffee farmers are from the Gayonese ethnic group.  A high percentage of farmers, typically from the most remote villages of the Takengon highlands, are widows who lost their husbands during periods of conflict in Aceh.
